Ingredients
- 4 slices of bread (white or whole grain)
- 4 slices of ham
- 4 slices of Gruyère cheese (or Swiss cheese)
- 2 tablespoons of Dijon mustard (optional)
- 2 tablespoons of butter (softened)
- 1/4 cup of grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Method
- Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on two slices of bread (if using).
- Layer each slice with a slice of ham and a slice of cheese.
- Top with the remaining slices of bread to form two sandwiches.
- Spread softened butter on the outside of each sandwich. This will help achieve a golden, crispy texture.
- If you like, sprinkle some grated Parmesan cheese on the buttered side of the sandwiches for extra flavour.
- Preheat your air fryer to 175°C (350°F)for about 3-5 minutes.
- Place the sandwiches in the air fryer basket. Make sure they are not overcrowded; you may need to do this in batches.
- Air fry for about 6-8 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
- Remove the sandwiches from the air fryer and let them cool for a minute. Cut in half and serve warm.
💡 You can add béchamel sauce to make it a Croque Madame (with a fried egg on top).
💡 Feel free to customize with additional ingredients like tomatoes or different types of cheese.
